DEFENSIVE PISTOL

Defensive pistol is the next step after our basic pistol courses for shooters interested in concealed carry, or shooters that would simply like to continue their firearm training. Students taking this course should already be comfortable safely loading, unloading, and firing their handgun with minimal assistance.

In this course, students will learn:

  • Pros and cons of different types of holsters

  • Proper and safe four-step draw from an inside or outside-the-waistband holster

  • Safe and efficient gun handling from the draw

  • Shooting with a timer

  • Shooting under pressure and objective analysis of student limitations

  • Managing different types of reloads and malfunction clearances

  • "Throttle control" with different sized targets and distances

  • Drills to practice in order to improve accuracy and speed

Students MUST bring an appropriate retention holster for this course, outlined below, and will be screened before class to ensure that the holster they are using is safe and acceptable. If the student brings a holster that does not fall within guidelines, we will attempt to find an acceptable substitute, but if a substitute can't be found, the student will be asked to reschedule the course. No refunds will be given.

Holster requirements:

  • Must be made of a rigid material such as Kydex (plastic) or full-grain high quality leather

  • Made for specific gun model (please avoid "one size fits all" holsters)

  • Designed for strong-side hip or appendix carry (no belly bands, cross-draw, ankle or shoulder holsters, etc.)

  • Does not collapse upon removal of the gun

  • Stays securely attached to belt and does not move when removing or replacing gun

  • Keeps gun pointed in a safe direction

These types of holsters are NOT allowed:

  • Serpa-type holsters, or any holster that requires trigger finger pressure to release gun

  • Nylon or fabric holsters that collapse upon removal of the gun

  • Pocket holsters

  • Shoulder holsters

  • Off-body holsters (purses, fanny packs, backpacks)

If you are unsure whether or not your holster meets our guidelines, please email academy@iishooting.com and we will be happy to discuss this with you.
Rental guns are not available for this course.

Please note: Safety is paramount for all of our classes and we strive to accommodate every student to the best of our ability. However, if a student repeatedly or blatantly violates safety rules, they are putting our instructors and other students at risk and will be asked to leave without a refund. If you are unsure of your skills, please contact us to discuss an evaluation.
