INDEPENDENCE STEP-BY-STEP NFA/SUPPRESSOR PROCESS
“Independence is here to assist you with the suppressor purchasing process.”
GENERAL INFORMATION:
-
This is a four-party process involving you, IIS, Silencer Shop, and the NFA. IIS only has control over part of it.
-
Your involvement is critical in this process: checking and reading emails, signing documents, and responding timely.
ASSOCIATED COSTS/FEES:
-
Cost of the suppressor from where you purchased it.
-
$100 fee to IIS for transfer fee if NOT purchased from IIS or Silencer Shop but transferred to IIS for processing (Free for Members).
-
$25 fee to IIS for processing and using the Silencer Shop software (This fee is only waived on suppressors purchased from Silencer Shop directly).
-
$200 fee to the IRS paid to the NFA Branch of the ATF.
FIRST: Setup Your Account (You & IIS can help)
-
Download the “Silencer Shop” app to your phone.
-
Open the app and request a “Kiosk Code” (QR Code).
-
Place the QR Code, on your phone, under the scanner on the Kiosk at IIS.
-
Fill out the data sheet and do fingerprints on the kiosk.
-
Upload a photo of yourself on the app, this can be done from home or on a computer.
SECOND: Purchase Your Suppressor (You & IIS can help)
-
Purchase your suppressor at IIS, or from the Silencer Shop online store and assign IIS as the dealer.
-
Purchase your suppressor from a manufacturer or an online dealer and have it transferred to IIS (This requires a $100 transfer fee to IIS),
-
Suppressors waiting for approval can be checked out and used on the range then returned while waiting for approval.
-
Disapproved/Canceled tax stamps if purchased from IIS
-
If the suppressor has been shot and returned the restocking fee is 80%
-
If the suppressor has NOT been shot and returned the restocking fee is 30%
-
-
Disapproved/Canceled tax stamps NOT purchased from IIS are NOT IIS's responsibility for the return process.
-
THIRD: IIS Will Assign Your Suppressor (IIS)
-
IIS takes the serial number from your purchased suppressor and assigns it to your Silencer Shop account with the email address you have on file with IIS.
-
IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU HAVE THE SAME EMAIL ON YOUR SILENCER SHOP ACCOUNT AND YOUR IIS ACCOUNT, THEY HAVE TO MATCH.
-
FOURTH: You Receive Several Emails with Directions from Silencer Shop (You)
-
Read each email from Silencer Shop, you will be asked to complete a series of tasks, and your response is mandatory.
-
You will be asked to register with an ATF Eforms account.
-
You will receive a DocuSign request.
-
You will receive a tax stamp payment request.
-
If you are using a trust, you will be required to submit notarized trust documents.
-
You will finally receive an email to come in to certify the application with IIS.
-
This must be done in person and requires your ATF Eforms username and 4-digit pin.
-
-
You will receive an email saying your account is “Submitted and in process waiting for the ATF Approval.”
-
FIFTH: Upon Approval (You & IIS)
-
You and IIS will receive an approval email from the ATF.
-
Come into IIS, you will be required to fill out a 4473 and the approval form will be used to approve the background check.
-
You will receive your suppressor. Always keep a copy of the tax stamp with the suppressor.
* ATF/NFA approval times are unique to their background check. Please do not compare your approval time to someone else’s. IIS does not get process updates from the ATF/NFA on the background check processing time. For updates call the NFA branch at (304) 616-4500
